The 3 C’s: consultations,contra-indications and contra-actions
Confidential consultations will be undertaken for all treatments. On your initial visit, a full consultation will be undertaken for Massage therapies and Reflexology. A shorter consultation is required for Hopi Ear Candling and Reiki. Full consultations usually take about 15 minutes and this is to help me to understand a bit more about your current health, wellbeing and lifestyle in order that treatment and after care can be given which is appropriate and relevant to you. Children under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by and consent given by a parent/guardian. All consultations and paperwork are kept in a locked secure filing cabinet in according with the Data Protection Act 1998.
There are some circumstances where it will not be appropriate for you to receive a treatment. These are called “Contra-indications” to treatment and depending on what type of the contra-indication, will depend on whether treatment can proceed. Contra-indications can be either total/restricted where treatment can’t proceed, medical permission required whereby treatment can proceed with your GP’s permission, or a contra-indication can be local where treatment can proceed but avoiding that particular area. The following list gives an indication of contra-indications but is not an exhaustive list. Please call me to discuss further if something isn’t on the list below.
Total: Fever, diarrhoea and vomiting, contagious or infectious disease, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, first trimester of pregnancy, head lice.
GP permission required: Cardio vascular conditions, medical oedema, osteoporosis, arthritis, epilepsy, trapped/inflamed nerve, asthma, undiagnosed lumps and bumps and pain, if you are already seeing a GP or another complementary therapy practitioner, cancer, anaphylaxis, high or low blood pressure, diabetes, pregnancy, asthma, nervous/psychotic conditions, or any dysfunction of the nervous system.
Local: Cuts, bruises, abrasions, sunburn, menstruation, recent fracture (up to three months), hormonal implants, fungal nail infections, verrucas, warts.
Everyone’s experience of a treatment is individual and unique and therefore reactions to any complementary therapy treatment will be too. In some circumstances you may find that after treatment, you notice you are hungrier or thirstier, or you may need to go to the toilet more often, you get a headache, or you feel more emotional, or tired. Such reactions are known as contra-actions to treatment and they are nothing to worry about. It is your body trying to reach homeostasis (balance) and any reaction should disappear within 24-48 hours.
